Is Your Baby Crib Bedding Set Risky?

Reports say that at least 15 % of the over 6000 deaths due to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) are caused by infants sleeping on soft nursery bedding. Is the plave where your baby sleeps at night not a danger to her?

When you place the baby on her belly, her head may sink into the mattress and cause suffocation if the bedding is too soft. Despite being comfortable for babies, soft mattresses may be dangerous for little ones. To avoid fatal accidents when the baby is sleeping, there should be someone always nearby to keep an eye on the position of the baby’s head. When the baby’s head is placed on the soft mattress, they may not have enough strength to come back in a good position.

To avoid accidents and fatalities, it is best to choose crib bedding and mattresses which are firm and not easily depressed under weight, even the light weight of a baby. You can assess the strength of a mattress with the simple test of pressing one hand down on the mattress and guaging the resistance to the force applied. resistance of the mattress is directly proportional to its goodness.

The crib is where babies should be safe, but too many times parents do not realize the danger they are in when they are in their cribs. Bumper pads are carelessly added in the crib without thinking that they may suffocate a baby if it will totally cover a baby’s face.

Parents should have care and precaution because infants are vulnerable and weak during this period. While some recommend firmer bumper pads, the best option is to remove bumpers from the crib entirely. The reason for this is that there are rare cases of strangulation by the bumper pad strings, and of suffocation between the pads and another object.

According to some research, mattress contains some toxic gases which may be harmful to baby’s health. Chemical compounds such as phosphouous and arsenic are being added to mattresses.  They are used as fire retardants but can be very dangerous. Poisonous, lethal gases are released once these chemical compounds interact with reactants. Baby naturally breathes in a large amount of it during sleep, and this can be fatal.

It has been proven that fungus that grows in infants bedding may release toxic gases. Because of that, they suggest that mom and dads not use any older style bedding in the baby’s room that could have mold and/or mildew on it from being used prior. To avoid fungus, parents should not reuse bedding in an infants crib, even though infants only sleep on it for a short period of time.  Instead, parents should buy new bedding. Added to that, rather than an old used nursery bedding, a new one looks much beautiful.

In addition, there is some concern about synthetic fabric in baby bedding sets. While there is no solid proof that synthetic fabrics are harmful to a baby, you may want to stick to natural fibers. There are plenty of stylish cotton crib bedding sets available (one of my favorites is the Maya baby bedding set by Trend Lab), so there is no need to sacrifice style for safety.

Using these guidelines, it should be easy for a parent to determine if their baby’s nursery bedding is safe. All the parents can sleep nicely in the night without any worries when they choose a safe bedding for their babies, if they did this their babies sound and a safe sleep.
