The Hemophilus influenza type B is a bacterium that causes severe illness particularly in young children below five years of age. This bacterium may cause several serious diseases like pneumonia, epiglottitis and meningitis. Pneumonia is a disease that is caused by the infection in the respiratory organ lungs. The symptoms of this pneumonia disease include a blue shade in the baby’s fingernails or lips, labored breathing and coughing. Pneumonia is frequently a secondary infection which follows upper respiratory influenza or infection, rubella or chicken pox. Epiglottitis is a dangerous but uncommon condition caused by this Hemophilus influenza type B bacterium. This epiglottitis might block the windpipe making the baby difficult to breathe. This disease is often mistake as a croup because of the symptoms of cough and stridor. Babies with this disease show intense sore throat symptoms. Meningitis affects the children of two months to two years of age. Its symptoms include nausea, sleepiness, decrease appetite and fever.
To prevent the children from these diseases it is necessary to inject them with Hib about baby vaccine. This vaccine should be injected three times on the first year of the child. The first dose should be given during the second month followed by the second dose during the fourth month of the baby. The third dose should be injected during the sixth month. The last booster dose should be given around twelve to eighteen months. This baby vaccine gives protection to the children from various dangerous diseases. Researches has shown that if a child gets all the four doses as per the schedule, then the child is 99 percent defended against these severe diseases.
