Caution Pays: Finding the Optimal Baby Crib Bedding
30th July 2009 by Babies No CommentsAnyone who doesn’t have their whole nursery completely planned out will likely be frustrated (and possibly terrified!) by the massive selection of nursery decor items that are available. If you’re looking for an animal design, you can find just about anything you can imagine, from caterpillar baby bedding to mystical creatures. Or maybe you’re looking for angels? There are well over a hundred unique options. The more popular the theme, the worse it gets. Don’t even get me started on nursery rhymes or cartoon characters!
Whether it’s boy nursery bedding or baby girl, when you see all the super-cute options you have, you may be tempted to overspend or break your budget. Baby bedding can be incredibly cute, and every parent wants the best for their new baby. But you’ve got to realize that your baby isn’t going to know the difference. Here are some things that your baby actually will care about:
- If you are considering crib bumpers, be aware that they have certain risks associated with them. It is all too easy for an active infant to pull a bumper loose and get it over his or her face. If this happens at night, a parent may not even realize until the next morning. If you decide to put crib bumpers in, be sure that they are properly secured and that any ties are on the outside of the railings. But the far better option is to just remove the pads completely, at least until the end of year one.
- Crib sheets consist of just a fitted sheet. There is no flat sheet and no pillowcase, because young babies really don’t need them. Not all crib sheets fit all mattresses, and the wrong sized sheet can pop off the mattress and cause safety risks. White sheets are a definite no - babies are messy and your white sheets won’t stay white for long. A waterproof mattress cover is a good idea, too.
- Go for a wearable blanket with a newborn, instead of a quilt or traditional blanket. And remember that babies don’t need to be any warmer than adults do. Stuffed animals and pillows are dangerous so take them out of the crib.
When choosing a crib set, be sure that it’s safe, then pick something cute - you don’t need to sacrifice one for the other.
